Notes on Distributed Systems

Last updated March 2026

I've been reading through the Raft consensus paper again this week. The leader election mechanism is elegant in its simplicity, though the log replication edge cases continue to surprise me.

One thing I keep coming back to is how modern cloud platforms abstract away so much of this complexity. When you deploy a function to the edge, you're standing on decades of distributed systems research without needing to think about it.

Next on my list: revisiting the CALM theorem and its implications for coordination-free consistency. There's a nice connection to CRDTs that I want to explore further.
